icloud is one of apple’s biggest challenges in 2017

apple is fond of talking about its secret sauce, about the things only it can do because of its unprecedented combination of hardware, software, and services. but for all that it has been very successful with its strategy of making the whole widget, from soup to nuts, it’s pretty clear that all three of those areas aren’t exactly on equal footing.hardware, sure. the company’s been making computers since the late ’70s, and it’s never seriously moved away from that—let’s not talk about the awkward fumbling of the clone years. likewise its software, which has gone from revolutionary operating system to also-ran back around to venerable and respected veteran of the computer industry.to read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

ios 10.3 with find my airpods enters public beta

just two days after apple unleashed ios 10.3 to developers, members of the public beta program have access to it too. anyone who wants to kick the tires of the first public beta can join the beta program by visiting beta.apple.com and signing in with your apple id.the big selling point of ios 10.3 is a great new feature for airpods owners, letting them locate a misplaced airpod by firing up the find my iphone app and having the airpods play a sound. the sound plays if the airpods are anywhere in bluetooth range of any of your apple devices (think macs, ipads, iphones) signed into the same icloud account. if your airpods are out of range or totally dead, the find my iphone app can let you know where they were last “seen” by bluetooth. it’s pretty handy.to read this article in full or to l

pokémon go on apple watch vs. pokémon go plus: which should you wear?

as a location-based game, pokémon go is perfect for when you’re on your commute, walking to a store, or just out and about. however, there’s one big h le to the experience: the need to have the app open and on your screen to track distance, ding nearby pokéstops, and try to catch pokémon. that makes it difficult to play when you are, for example, holding the hand of a small child, carrying bags, or just simply trying to watch where you’re walking. the pokémon go plus, released in september, helps with a lot of that. it’s a tiny wearable device, worn around the wrist or clipped onto clothes, that buzzes and lights up any time you’re near a pokémon or pokéstop, and can automatically snag items or try to catch the creature with a press of a on. it’ll also track all of your distance when ac

this time-lapse captures the awe-inspiring power of lava flowing into the ocean

any seasoned landscape p og her can tell you that the moment spent actually pressing the shutter is just the tip of the iceberg – hours and even days are spent planning, getting into position and waiting for the right conditions. so the story behind jack fusco's impressive new time-lapse, 61g ocean entry, might be familiar to landscape p o veterans. fusco and team traveled to hawaii's big island hoping to capture a somewhat rare occurrence: lava flowing into the pacific ocean from kilauea volcano. the goal was to capture a time-lapse of the stars along with the spectacular light show created by the flowing lava meeting ocean water. if you watch the video above and you'll see that fusco's mission was a success, but the behind-the-scenes story is equally fascinating

iphone 7 plus survives 13 hours in icy russian river

a video posted by fedor (@emfedor1983) on jan 20, 2017 at 11:37pm pst apple's iphone 7 isn't officially cl ified as a waterproof. with its ip67 rating it is capable of surviving immersion at a depth of one meter (3.3 feet) for 30 minutes but this is meant to protect against accidental drops into water or splashes rather than make the phone suitable for underwater activities.  however, an incident during an ice fishing trip in russia has now demonstrated that the device offers more environmental protection than its ip rating would suggest. according to russian language publication ykt.ru a fisherman dropped his iphone 7 plus into an ice fishing hole in the city of yakutsk. unable to retrieve the device, it was left in the water overnight, until the next day a diver fri
