are you having issues with your old iphone battery? apple may be able to help—but only if your phone is an iphone 6s. in this week’s episode of the iphone show, oscar explains why apple is only offering a free battery replacement program for certain iphone 6s devices that shut down unexpectedly, even as more and more iphone 6 users are reporting similar issues. but smartphone batteries tend to get worse over time, and these issues are not affecting the newest iphones. at least it’s not as bad as samsung’s battery problems.to read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

pokémon duel is somewhat clever, but also frequently frustrating

free-to-play games often look appealing, but it’s difficult to know at a glance whether the business model is insidious and fun ruining, or reasonable and worth pumping a few bucks into. with freemium field test, we’ll take a recent free-to-play ios game, put it through its paces, and let you know if it’s really worth your time (and money).pokémon go might have seemed like a fad, but even though it’s no longer the widespread craze it was last summer, the game recently p ed an estimated $1 billion in revenue—faster than any other mobile game to date. we’ve highlighted some ways in which the game has only gotten better over time, but one thing hasn’t changed at all: you can’t really do much with the location-based experience unless you leave home. to read this article in full or to leave a

why apple doesn’t need a ‘revolutionary’ iphone

in apple’s most recent earnings call, tim cook revealed that the iphone 7 and 7 plus set a record for the most iphone sold in a single quarter. together, these iphones sold over 78 million units and made over $54 billion, ending apple’s three consecutive quarters of declining iphone sales. in this week’s episode of the iphone show, let’s explore what the the success of the iphone 7 means for the future of the iphone. after all, the iphone 7 was originally criticized for being “boring.” but if a boring iphone can still make billions of dollars, does apple have any motivation to take a risk and create a “revolutionary” device?to read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

pokémon go on apple watch vs. pokémon go plus: which should you wear?

as a location-based game, pokémon go is perfect for when you’re on your commute, walking to a store, or just out and about. however, there’s one big h le to the experience: the need to have the app open and on your screen to track distance, ding nearby pokéstops, and try to catch pokémon. that makes it difficult to play when you are, for example, holding the hand of a small child, carrying bags, or just simply trying to watch where you’re walking. the pokémon go plus, released in september, helps with a lot of that. it’s a tiny wearable device, worn around the wrist or clipped onto clothes, that buzzes and lights up any time you’re near a pokémon or pokéstop, and can automatically snag items or try to catch the creature with a press of a on. it’ll also track all of your distance when ac

why a dual-processor fusion mac makes a lot of sense

why use one processor when two will do? this week, bloomberg reported that apple has developed an arm-based chip that it will integrate into future macs to handle some of the low-power responsibilities, thus taking pressure off the main, more power-hungry intel processor.here’s the thing: this multipronged approach is nothing new to apple. and while i do believe that apple is investigating building computers based solely on the same type of arm architecture it uses in its ios devices, this latest report doesn’t necessarily draw a straight line to that future. after all, the touch bar and touch id sensor in the new macbook pro already rely on an arm chipped dubbed the t1.to read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

connecting an apple led cinema display to a usb-c macbook or macbook pro? here a

apple has rarely released sales figures on particular models of products they offer, but i have to imagine they shipped at least hundreds of thousands of its two apple led cinema displays (24-inch and 27-inch) based on the number of people who want to connect them via usb-c to a 12-inch macbook or a 2016 macbook pro. i purchased several adapters and cables that can take the led cinema display's mini-displayport (not thunderbolt) and convert it into something that p es over usb-c in a compatible chain that allows you to connect to the usb-c equipped macbook and 2016 macbook pro. my testing shows three affordable and viable options, plus a reasonable option for a full-featured usb-c dock that requires just a simple adapter.to read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click h

podcast 545: ault on batteries

batteries. no one's ever really happy with them, but everything has one now and they all need charging. with the help of macworld senior editor roman loyola, gordon ung of pcworld went deep in testing the macbook pro's battery recently, and found it to be pretty darn good, typically besting the much larger battery in the last generation. and speaking of batteries, we have an extended public service announcement about never ever using a device that's bulging, because that means the battery is downright unsafe. show notes apple’s q1 2017: records for the iphone and services, but the ipad still struggles by jason snellto read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

5 things the ipad pro needs instead of skinnier bezels

while the ipad has certainly matured since its humble beginnings, it still has many of the same shortcomings it did at its debut in 2010. even with productivity-minded accessories like the smart keyboard and apple pencil, the ipad is still a far cry from the super computer apple’s new tagline would have you believe it is. and you only need to look at the latest sales figures to see that people aren’t into it as much as they once were. of course, apple isn’t resting on its laurels. according to oft-accurate analyst ming-chi kuo, on the docket for this year is a 10.5-inch model with super-skinny bezels, pushing the 9.7-inch model to low-cost status and presumably killing off the ipad mini altogether. a move to a larger lineup would further solidify apple’s move to make the ipad more mac t

spark for mac review: a great mobile email client, also quite good on desktop

after establishing a solid reputation as a slick third-party email ios client, spark (free, available on the app store recently leapt from mobile to the mac desktop. this marks ukrainian developer readdle’s second full-fledged macos application after pdf expert, an excellent document viewer/editor that finally got me to kick the preview habit for good. although spark for ios is quite good, the idea of using different email clients on mobile and desktop never appealed to me. i do the bulk of my daily work on an imac, so having the same application available on my iphone and ipad is a must. now that spark for mac has arrived, is it finally curtains for apple mail? the short answer is: almost.to read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

lawsuit claims apple broke facetime to force ios 6 users to upgrade

did apple purposefully break ios 6, rendering old iphones unusable before their time? that’s the question at the heart of a new cl -action lawsuit against the cupertino company, which claims that apple killed facetime in ios 6 to avoid paying hefty licensing fees. the basis of the lawsuit, first reported by appleinsider, comes from details that emerged last year in virnetx’s patent infrin ent suit against the company. virnetx licenses patents to technology companies, and one of those patents covers peer-to-peer audio and video transfer; apple used peer-to-peer transfer to power facetime. when virnetx, which has been described as a “patent troll,” e after apple, the company switched to another relay method for facetime, using the third-party server akami. that’s where things get tricky.

the apple watch will soon get new siri powers and theater mode

when watchos 3.2 rolls out, you’ll be able to use siri to perform tasks in third-party apps on your apple watch just like you can on your iphone. this will cut down on some of the scrolling and swiping around the watch’s tiny display that you have to do to use apps like uber, runkeeper, and other siri-compatible services.the new feature, first noticed by techcrunch, will make the apple watch easier to use. i already use siri to send messages and control apple tunes on my watch, but siri’s usefulness has been restricted to apple’s built-in apps until now.to read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

how to create spotlight searches to store as smart folders in macos sierra

apple introduced smart folders years ago, but they’re often given short shrift compared to other macos features. while recently responding to readers’ troubles for mac 911 and researching other stories, i discovered i’d mostly given up on a powerful option for saving recurring searches. this is partly due to spotlight. for many years, starting with its introduction, spotlight indexing could be spotty or crash and re-run, and searches weren’t always as comprehensive and accurate as one could hope. that’s settled down. even on searches that match hundreds of thousands of results on my 2014 mac mini (across both a solid-state drive and external hard drives), spotlight performance is pretty zippy.to read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

tim cook: apple may take legal action over immigration restrictions

after sending an email to employees expressing apple’s opposition to the trump administration’s new immigration restrictions, apple ceo tim cook is now making a forceful stand. “more than any country in the world, this country is strong because of our immigrant background and our capacity and ability as people to welcome people from all kinds of backgrounds,” cook told the wall street journal. “that’s what makes us special. we ought to pause and really think deeply through that.”to read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

how to remove mackeeper part ii (the pop-up edition)

i recently provided instructions for removing the mackeeper app from your mac, along with its component parts. but for some, that’s only a piece of the puzzle. this question is typical of the follow-up email: but how do i stop mackeeper notifications from popping up in the safari and chrome browsers and asking me to install it? the first thing i’d suggest you do is remove any mackeeper-related cookies in your browser. in safari this means opening safari’s preferences, clicking the privacy tab, and then clicking the manage website data button. search for mackeeper in the sheet that appears and there’s a good chance you’ll find a cookie for mackeeper.com. select it and click the remove button. vow to never visit the site again.to read this article in full or to leave a comment, please c

the bad news: iphone sales are up

apple snags amazon fire tv exec to lead apple tv efforts

apple is shaking up its tv department in a sign that the company is paying more attention to its set-top box. earlier in february, former amazon fire tv manager timothy twerdahl joined apple to oversee product marketing for the apple tv, bloomberg reported. that role was held by pete distad, who will now shift over to the content side to help eddy cue make more tv deals. twerdahl certainly knows his stuff: before joining amazon, he worked at netflix and roku.to read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

ios 10.3 with find my airpods enters public beta

just two days after apple unleashed ios 10.3 to developers, members of the public beta program have access to it too. anyone who wants to kick the tires of the first public beta can join the beta program by visiting beta.apple.com and signing in with your apple id.the big selling point of ios 10.3 is a great new feature for airpods owners, letting them locate a misplaced airpod by firing up the find my iphone app and having the airpods play a sound. the sound plays if the airpods are anywhere in bluetooth range of any of your apple devices (think macs, ipads, iphones) signed into the same icloud account. if your airpods are out of range or totally dead, the find my iphone app can let you know where they were last “seen” by bluetooth. it’s pretty handy.to read this article in full or to l
